What is Quinoa:

Quinoa is an excellent alternative to rice, as it is a good source of protein, fiber, phosphorus, magnesium, and iron. Although most consider quinoa a grain, the edible portion is actually a seed.

How to cook Quinoa:

  • Bring 2 cups of water or vegetable broth to a boil.
  • Add 1 cup of raw quinoa to the boiling water.
  • Reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and allow to cool for 5 minutes.
  • 1 cup of raw quinoa should yield approximately 3 cups of cooked quinoa.
  • If you find that your quinoa has a bitter taste, simply rinse the quinoa using a mesh strainer. This should remove the majority of the bitterness that comes from the outer coating of the seed. This process is usually unnecessary, as most manufacturers remove this coating prior to packaging.
