My Misconceptions About Brussels Sprouts

Post image for My Misconceptions About Brussels Sprouts

I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a brussels sprout in my life! That is until now!

For the past 25 years, I have been under the impression that brussels sprouts were gross, they smelled like feet, and no one in their right mind would want to eat one. If you liked brussels sprouts, there must be something wrong with your taste buds!

And then one day, I was walking by a display of brussels sprouts in Costco, and out of the blue I thought, “Hey, those bright green mini cabbages look delicious!” So, I tentatively grabbed a bag off the shelf and looked inquisitively at my husband for his reaction.

The look on his face went from, “Ew, Gross! I won’t eat those!”
To, “Fine if you really want them, but I guarantee that they’ll be disgusting!”
And finally landed on, “Yeah sure, they couldn’t be that bad. Let’s give them a chance!”

Yay! I wasn’t going to have to experiment with these “nasty” brussels sprouts alone!

Here are the results to our experiment…

Baked Brussels Sprouts – Click here to print recipe

  • 2 cups Brussels sprouts – cleaned, stems removed and quartered
  • 1 tbs Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1 tbs Minced garlic
  • 1/2 tsp Thyme
  • 1/2 tsp Oregano
  • 1/8 tsp salt

  • Preheat oven to 400º F
  • Wash brussels sprouts
  • Remove dark outer leaves
  • Cut the stem off at the base
  • Cut the brussels sprouts into quarters
  • Place brussels sprouts in a baking dish
  • Mix the rest of the ingredients in a small bowl, then pour the mixture over the brussels sprouts. Stir until they are evenly coated
  • Place the tray in the oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes
  • Stir occasionally to ensure that the brussels sprouts don’t burn

3 Things I’ve Learned From This Experiment:

1. Try new things. Not everything that you thought was gross as a kid is actually gross
2. How to prepare tasty brussels sprouts
3. Everything tastes good smothered in garlic :)
